Electrician Licensing in Wyoming

Wyoming Electrician License Verification

In Wyoming, the governing board for electricians is the Electrical Board, which operates in conjunction with the Wyoming Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety. This department is responsible for issuing and renewing all electrical licenses in the state. The Electrical Board consists of five members appointed by the Governor, including master electricians, journeyman electricians, and electrical contractors. Licenses include Apprentice, Journeyman, Master, Electrical Contractor, and Low Voltage/Limited Technician.

To become a Journeyman Electrician, an applicant must demonstrate 8,000 hours (approximately four years) of work experience in the electrical wiring industry and 576 hours of related classroom instruction, typically acquired through a Department of Labor-approved apprenticeship program. The journeyman exam consists of 80 questions and requires a passing score of at least 70%. Journeyman licenses must be renewed every three years, between April 1st and July 1st, with a $50 fee.

For a Master Electrician license, candidates need an additional four years (8,000 hours) of experience as a licensed journeyman, totaling 16,000 hours of work experience and 576 hours of classroom instruction. The master electrician exam has 100 questions and requires a 75% passing score. Master licenses are renewed every three years, between October 1st and January 1st, for a fee of $100.

All Master and Journeyman electricians are required to complete 16 hours of continuing education every three years for license renewal, with at least 8 of these hours specifically covering updates to the National Electrical Code (NEC). The State of Wyoming enforces the 2023 edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) statewide, effective July 1, 2023.

Insurance and Bonding Mandates

Wyoming requires all contractors to hold electrician insurance, which provides protection to the consumer and reduces legal risk. This typically includes general liability coverage. While Wyoming does not mandate workers' compensation insurance for all contractors, it is required for government projects and highly recommended for high-risk work in sectors like energy and mining. Electrical contractor licenses require the designation of a Wyoming-licensed Master Electrician as the "Master of Record," who is responsible for ensuring compliance with all electrical safety regulations. The electrical contractor license application requires acknowledgment of responsibilities regarding workers' compensation.

Permitting and Local Regulations

An electrical wiring permit must be obtained prior to beginning any new construction or remodeling if the work requires a public utility to connect or disconnect and restore electrical power. Failure to obtain a permit before starting electrical installation can result in criminal penalties and may lead to the suspension or revocation of a Wyoming electrical license. Permits can be obtained from the Chief Electrical Inspector or through entities determined by the Chief Electrical Inspector. A plan review is required for specific projects, including construction or additions to state/local government-owned/leased buildings, schools, or buildings over 5000 sq ft with public access.
